Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to NYIT in a non-conference contest on Janet L. Ficke Field, on Wednesday, April 18. The Panthers broke the 30 win plateau with wins of 6-1 and 8-1 over the visiting Bears. With the sweep Adelphi improves to 31-16-1 overall, while NYIT drops to 12-31.
Game One
The Panthers scored in each of the first four innings, getting two in the first on an illegal pitch that brought home
Emily Dorko and an
Amanda Krier blast over the fence in left center, giving Adelphi a 2-1 lead after one inning. The Brown and Gold mustered up one run in each of the next two innings, courtesy of singles from Dorko and
Jaclyn Binstock, pushing Adelphi's advantage to 4-1.
The final two runs came in the fourth inning, as a bunt single from Dorko, her third of the game, plated
Kayla Rieger and Krier worked a bases loaded walk that brought home Dorko, 6-1. That was all she wrote for NYIT as
Devon Kelly went 6.1 innings for her 13th win of the year, striking out two and giving up just four hits.
Katie Andrews took the mound to get the last two outs of the game.
Dorko was a flawless 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Binstock and Rieger were both 2-3 with one run scored. In addition, Krier was 1-1 with two runs scored and two RBI in game one.
Game Two
NYIT got on the scoreboard first again in game two, scoring one run in the top of the second on a single to center. However, Adelphi wasted no time answering back, erupting for six runs in the bottom of the inning.
Meghan Heiser got things rolling with a double down the left field line that cleared the previously full bases, 3-1 Adelphi. Krier followed up with a single that scored Amy Ogden, while a Binstock ground out and a Rieger single netted the other two Panther runs, 6-1.
The Panthers kept the offense going, scoring a single run in the fourth on a
Victoria Wink sacrifice fly that plated
Jeanine Leo and added another run in the fifth, when Salerno moved off of first to steal and Rieger smartly timed her run home to score before Salerno was run down, 8-1.
Laurin Watts, Andrews and
Natalie Camarda combined to throw seven innings, while Andrews was credited with her ninth win of the season. Watts opened the game, going 2.1 innings, with three hits and two walks. Andrews put in the bulk of the work on the mound with 3.2 innings of one hit, two strikeout softball, while Camarda threw one spotless inning.
Leo and Reiger were both 2-3 at the plate, with Leo adding two runs scored and Rieger a run scored and an RBI. Dorko was 2-4 with a run in the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire for a 1:00 pm meeting with Saint Anselm.
