Box Score 2 Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Pleasantville, New York on Tuesday, April 17 to take on Northeast-10 rival Pace University. The Panthers out slugged the Setters, 11-5 in game one, but were out hit in the second game, 12-8. With the split, Adelphi sits at 29-16-1 ovearll and 19-7 in conference, while Pace registers a record of 27-15 overall and 14-12 in NE-10 play.
Game One
Pace jumped on Adelphi early, scoring all four of their runs in the first inning, using three singles and a walk to do all the damage. The Panthers remained quiet in the second, but a
Meghan Heiser single to left center in the third, scored
Victoria Wink and
Heather Salerno, cutting the Pace lead in half, 4-2.
The Brown and Gold took the lead with four runs in the fourth, getting three off of a
Jeanine Leo base clearing double and the fourth came off of Salerno's bat, as her single to right scored Amy Ogden, 6-4. Adelphi was shut out in the fifth, but plated five more runs in the sixth, four coming off the bat of
Katie Andrews, who hit a bomb over the wall for a grand slam.
Devon Kelly started the game for the Panthers and went 1.1 innings, striking out two, while Andrews put in 3.2 innings of work, picking up the win, striking out two and allowing just two hits.
Salerno and Wink were red hot at the dish, going 3-4 with two runs each, while Salerno added an RBI.
Jaclyn Binstock and Andrews were both 2-4, with both players scoring a run and Andrews adding four RBI.
Game Two
The first three innings of game two was a pitchers dual, and then things exploded in the fourth. The Panthers struck first, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth on singles from Andrews and Ogden and two more runs on a double from Binstock, 4-0. Pace pulled back three runs in the bottom of the inning with a single to right and a walk, 4-3.
The Panthers were shut down in the top of the fifth, while Pace added three more runs on a double to right, followed by a single to down the right field line, taking a 6-4 lead. An Andrews double down the line in the top of the sixth cut the margin to just one run, 6-5 however, the Setters put the pressure on Adelphi with six runs in the bottom of the seventh and lead 12-5 with one inning to go.
Adelphi rallied in the top of the seventh, putting their first two batters on base and then getting a long home run from Wink, cutting the lead to four runs, 12-8, but that was as close as Adelphi would get.
Laurin Watts opened the game for the Panthers, throwing 4.1 innings, striking out three, while Andrews came on in relief and was credited with the loss after going 1.1 innings and striking out one. Kelly made a brief appearance, closing out the game with 0.1 innings pitched and one strike out.
Emily Dorko, Andrews and Binstock were each 2-4 at the plate, with Dorko scoring two runs and Binstock and Andrews adding one, while Andrews had two RBI and Binstock one.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, April 18 when they play host to NYIT at 3:00 pm on Janet L. Ficke Field.
