South Easton, Mass. - The fifth-seeded Adelphi University men's tennis team worked a 4-1 lead over fourth-seeded Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals competition on Tuesday, but the Skyhawks won four consecutive singles matches to earn a 5-4 win and advance to Thursday's semifinal match at #1 Merrimack College.
The Panthers took a 2-1 lead after doubles play thanks to wins by
Andreas Hammar and
Richard Ferguson at the top slot and
Ryan Villarruel and
Bryan Kallenberg at No. 2 doubles. Hammar and
Chiwete Njokanma then prevailed at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, to give Adelphi a 4-1 advantage with four remaining singles matches. The Skyhawks then turned things around when they need to most, rattling off four consecutive victories to snatch the win and eliminate the Panthers from the postseason.
In the team's first season under Head Coach Lauren Leo, Adelphi finishes the year 9-12 overall and posted a 7-4 mark in the NE-10.
