Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to St. Michael's College on Sunday, April 15 in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers used pitching in a 3-0 game one win, following that up with a hitting display in a 8-3 game two victory. With the sweep, Adelphi improves to 28-15-1 overall and 18-6 in the NE-10, while St. Michael's falls to 5-25 overall and 3-19 in conference action.
Game One
The Panthers and Purple Knights worked through two and a half innings of scoreless softball before Adelphi broke the deadlock and got on the board.
Emily Dorko laid down a bunt single and a St. Michael's throwing error sent the ball into the right field corner, allowing Dorko to sprint around the bases, reaching home and giving Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
The Brown and Gold added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Katie Andrews drove in the first run with a single that scored
Kristina Cavallo and
Jaclyn Binstock followed with a single of her own, plating
Amanda Krier, 3-0 Panthers.
The Adelphi pitching staff took over from there, keeping St. Michael's off the board for the full seven innings to preserve the 3-0 victory.
Devon Kelly took care of the first five innings, giving up just one hit during her time on the mound and striking out two to collect her 12th win of the season. Andrews took over in the sixth and pitched the final two innings, striking out one and giving up no hits to collect the save.
Dorko and
Meghan Heiser led the offense, as both players went 2-3 and Dorko added a run.
Victoria Wink, Krier, Andrews, Binstock and
Kayla Rieger collected one hit each.
Game Two
Adelphi wasted no time in game two, scoring in the first inning on a passed ball that scored
Emily Dorko, who led the bottom of the inning off with a walk, 1-0 Panthers. After a scoreless top of the second, the Brown and Gold erupted for seven runs on six hits.
Elizabeth Lindner got things started with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Binstock and then two batters later a Dorko bunt single brought around Amy Ogden, 3-0 Panthers.
Then a Krier triple to right center cleared the bases, pushing Adelphi's advantage to 6-0, followed later in the inning by an Ogden single up the middle that increased the Panther margin to 8-0. the Purple Knights attempted to claw back into the game in the top of the fifth and sixth, but could muster just three runs, as Andrews shut the door, collecting the 8-3 win for Adelphi.
Andrews threw 4.2 innings to pick up her seventh win of the season, as she struck out four and gave up just three hits.
Laurin Watts came in and provided 2.1 innings of relieif in the middle of the game, striking out two.
Krier was 1-3 with three RBI and one run scored, while Ogden was 2-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Dorko also had a good day at the plate, going 1-1 with two runs and a RBI.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, April 17 when they travel to Pleasantville, New York for a 3:00 pm Northeast-10 Conference meeting with Pace.
