Box Score 2 Springfield, MA - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts on Wednesday, March 28 for a Northeast-10 contest with American International College. The Panthers squeaked out a two run win in game one, 3-1 and followed that up with a 6-5 shortened game two victory, due to darkness. With the sweep Adelphi improves to 14-9-1 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10, while AIC falls to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
Game One
Devon Kelly picked up her sixth win of the season, throwing a complete game gem in the 3-1 win. She tossed seven innings, struck out five and gave up just two hits and one run in the victory. The Panthers scored all three runs in the third, starting the inning by loading the bases on a
Victoria Wink walk, a
Kayla Rieger single and an
Emily Dorko bunt.
Heather Salerno then drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Krier reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Adelphi's second run. Dorko was then brought around by a throwing error, giving Adelphi a 3- 0 lead.
AIC's lone run was scored in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of an Adelphi error to get on the board. However, Kelly managed to keep the Yellowjackets off the board for the remaining seven innings, setting AIC down with a looking strikeout in the final inning.
Rieger was on fire at the plate, going 3-3 with a run scored, while Wink was 1-1 with a run and a walk. In addition, Dorko and
Katie Andrews were both 1-3.
Game Two
AIC put a run on the board first in game two, getting a run in the bottom of the first, 1-0.
Jaclyn Binstock came through for Adelphi in the top of the second, driving in Dorko and Salerno on a single up the middle to quickly put the Panthers back on top, 2-1.
However, the Yellowjackets answered right back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of two hits to even the score at two apiece. Adelphi countered again in the top of the fourth as Binstock drove in two more runs on a double to center, bringing around Dorko and Salerno for a second time, 4-2.
The bottom of the fifth was all AIC, as the Yellowjackets hung three runs on the board, taking advantage of two hits and two Adelphi miscues to slip in front, 5-4. But, the AIC lead was short lived. Adelphi scored two runs in the top of the sixth, the first when
Jeanine Leo took home on an AIC error and the sixth and winning run was scored by Rieger, courtesy of an Andrews single, 6-5.
Kelly came on in relief to pick up her first save of the season, throwing one inning of scoreless softball, striking out two. Andrews got the start and tossed three innings, and allowed two runs and four hits.
Laurin Watts also come on in relief, pitching two innings, striking out two and giving up three runs and two hits and evening her season record at 4-4 with the win.
Dorko was the hot bat in game two, going 3-4 with two runs, while Binstock was 2-3 with four RBI from the two hole. Salerno was 1-2 with two runs, while Leo was 1-2 with a run scored.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, March 31 when they play host to Bentley at noon on Janet L. Ficke Field in Garden City.
