Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to the University of New Haven on Saturday, March 24 on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers out hit the Chargers in a, 5-3 game one victory and
Laurin Watts no hit New Haven in a 2-0 game two victory. Wth the sweep, Adelphi improves to 12-7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers fall to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
Game One
Adelphi started fast, thanks to lead off singles from
Emily Dorko and
Heather Salerno.
Amanda Krier followed with a single, scoring Dorko and then a
Katie Andrews ground out plated Salerno, 2-0 Adelphi. Then
Jaclyn Binstock bunted home Krier, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead at the end of two innings. The Brown and Gold went silent for the next three innings, while New Haven added one run on a double to left center in the third to pull within two, 3-1.
Victoria Wink and
Kayla Rieger gave Adelphi two runners and no outs to start the bottom of the fifth and after two outs, both runners were driven in by a Krier single to center that pushed Adelphi in front, 5-1. After a scoreless sixth, New Haven threatened in the seventh, scoring two runs, but were shut down by
Natalie Camarda, who came on in relief of
Devon Kelly, securing the 5-3 win for the Panthers.
Kelly was credited with the win and improves to 5-3 overall, courtesy of a six inning, one run, five strikeout and five hit performance. Camarda picked up her first save of the season, throwing one inning of relief, striking out one and giving up two hits.
Krier and Binstock did the bulk of the damage for Adelphi at the plate, Krier was 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Binstock was 2-2 with an RBI.
Jeanine Leo, Wink, Rieger and Dorko were all 1-2 at the plate.
Game Two
The second game was all about Watts, who tossed a complete game no hitter, striking out eight and giving up just two walks, facing just three batters over the minimum of 21. The win evened Watts season record at 3-3 and lowers her season ERA to 2.79.
The Panthers did all of their damage in the second inning. Wink walked up to the plate with two outs and Binstock on third and Leo on second and stroked a single back up the middle, scoring both Binstock and Leo to push the Panthers up 2-0, which was plenty of run support for Watts.
Wink led the offense, going 2-2 with two RBI, while Binstock was 1-2 and Krier and Salerno were 1-3 at the plate.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, March 25 when they play host to Northeast-10 rival Southern Connecticut State University at noon on Janet L. Ficke Field.
