Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to cross town rival C.W. Post on Thursday, March 22 in the inaugural game on the newly renovated Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers dropped game one in five innings, 11-1, and then fell 6-4, in game two, despite loading the bases on three occassions. With the losses, Adelphi falls to 10-7-1 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 12-8.
Game One
C.W. Post jumped on Adelphi in the first inning, scoring two runs on walks, a run on a wild pitch and the final run on a single to third, taking a 4-0 lead. The Pioneers added two more runs in the second on a home run over the left field wall, to push their lead to 6-0 after two innings of play.
A scoreless third inning was followed by a five run fourth for C.W. Post and put the Panthers in a 11-0 hole, three and a half innings into the contest. Adelphi showed signs of life in the bottom of the third as a
Victoria Wink drive to left center put her on second base and brought
Jaclyn Binstock around to score, but the Brown and Gold would get no closer, falling 11-1 in five innings.
Laurin Watts was credited with the loss, throwing just two thirds of an inning, striking out one, walking four and giving up three earned runs.
Katie Andrews tossed the remaining 4.1 innings, striking out two and giving up four hits and four walks.
Emily Dorko swung a strong bat in the game, going 2-3, while
Amanda Krier and
Victoria Wink were both 1-2.
Game Two
The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the first with a three run home run over the wall in left center and threatened again later in the inning, putting a runner on third, but
Devon Kelly induced a ground out to end the danger. Adelphi took advantage of several walks and a C.W. Post error to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, but
Jaclyn Binstock's hard hit drive back at the pitcher was snagged to end the inning.
Adelphi loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and stole a run back, when Amy Ogden crossed home plate on a passed ball, making the score 3-1. However, after two scoreless innings, C.W. Post hung two more on the board with a sacrifice fly and courtesy of an Adelphi miscue to push the lead to 5-1. But, the Panthers clawed right back, scoring their first run of the inning when
Katie Andrews was hit by a pitch, scoring
Heather Salerno. The second run came when
Meghan Heiser worked a walk, pullling Adelphi within two again, 5-3.
After a scoreless sixth, the Pioneers got a solo home run in the top of the seventh to push their lead to three runs, 6-3 with just three outs to go for the win. However, Adelphi did not go quietly, as the Panthers put runners on second and third and Heiser drove in another run with a single down the left field line that plated
Amanda Krier, 6-4. Adelphi then loaded the bases with two outs and the winning run on first base, but could not close the deal, falling 6-4.
Kelly took the loss, falling to 4-3 overall and threw seven innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and striking out one. Krier and Heiser were the hot bats for Adelphi, both going 2-3, Krier with a run scored and Heiser with two RBI.
Adelpih returns to action on Saturday, March 24 when they play host to New Haven at noon on Janet L. Ficke Field.
