Philadelphia, PA – The women's lacrosse team visited Philadelphia University for a non-conference contest earlier this afternoon. From the get go, it was all Adelphi as they compiled 11 unanswered goals in the first half alone while holding the hosts to just one. When all was said and done, eight women managed to score at least one goal and when the final horn sounded, the score read 21-3 in favor of the Panther stickwomen. With the win, Adelphi advances to 3-0 while the Rams drop their season opener and slip to 0-1.
Erica Devito was the top point earner in the win, tallying nine points on five goals and four assists. Teammate
Sara Sangiorgio was behind her with six goals while
Devan Crimi,
Marissa Mills,
Danielle Jaycox and
Alexa Froccaro each chipped in with two goals.
Angela Oliveto and
Meg Brown rounded out the scoring with a goal each while
Felicia Mills won five draw controls.
As a team, the Panthers dominated on all ends, holding an advantage in shots, 44-6, ground balls, 14-7, draw controls, 15-10, caused turnovers, 6-2, and turnovers, 7-24.
For Philadelphia, the three goals came off the sticks of Elizabeth Marrosu, Emily Ray and Taylor Peltzer, who also earned the team's lone assist. Melissa Styer and Rebecca Cox combine for five ground balls while Caribet Shappell, Allison Brian and Hannah Kuranz won seven of the Rams 10 draw controls.
In just the opening 1:40, Devito began what would be the start of 11 straight goals on a successful free position shot. Within a matter of 2:55, Sangiorgio dumped in three goals, with one of them coming on a Devito assist to quickly make it a 4-0 game.
Marissa Mills then tacked on her first of two goals in the game with
Erica Devito following that up with her second and third goals, further putting the Rams in an unfortunate 7-0 deficit all before the midway point of the first half.
The Panthers didn't stop there. Crimi and Jaycox also made good on shots while Sangiorio tacked on another two to make it 11 in a row. The Rams finally got on the board courtesy of Emily Ray who managed to get one past cage minder
Jordann Dempsey. It proved to be the only goal in 38:25 of action for Dempsey, who made just one save and earned her third win of the season.
Before the teams split for halftime, Adelphi went on to find the back of the cage on three more occasions, essentially putting the game out of reach, 14-1 at the end of 30 minutes of play.
The second half was highlighted by seven more Panther goals with Froccaro, Oliveto and Brown joining their teammates in the scoring frenzy. With just under six minutes to go, Marrosu and Peltzer put the Ram's second and third goals on the board as their shots found their way past
Jennifer Rojas. Froccaro, with just over 90 seconds remaining in the game, put the icing on the cake with the Panther's 21
st and final goal.
The Brown and Gold are back in action on Thursday, March 15 when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on Southern New Hampshire University in their first Northeast-10 contest of the season. The game is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
