Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University baseball team played its third annual charity baseball game against Hank's Yanks, an 18-and-under baseball team funded by New York Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner, and raised over $900 for Ed Randall's Fans for the Cure foundation on Saturday.
Randall, longtime New York baseball journalist and host of
Ed Randall's Talking Baseball radio show, spoke during the opening ceremonies about his foundation, which raises prostate cancer awareness. All proceeds from the event went to Fans for the Cure, which Adelphi baseball head coach
Dom Scala said was a simple way for the University to thank Randall for generously hosting the Adelphi Fall Cocktail Party for the last three years.
"It was a very special day with a very important message," Scala said. "Basically his message is to make everyone aware of the disease that could have killed him if he ignored it. The game was great and we got work in, but to me the game was secondary [to helping Fans for the Cure]."
The nine-inning contest pitted the Panthers against some of the most talented young baseball players in New York. Coached by Ray Negron, a Yankee executive and best-selling author, the Hank's Yanks squad features many up-and-coming baseball starts, including Negron's son Ricky (Babylon High School with plans to attend North Carolina State University) and Esteban Gomez (35th round pick by Houston Astros in 2010 MLB draft).
