The first-seeded Adelphi University baseball team took on the third-seeded Wildcats of Wilmington University this afternoon in Day Two of the NCAA East Regional Championship. Down 5-4 headed late, Adelphi scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 6-5 victory. Adelphi improves to 35-12-2, while Wilmington ends their season at 37-12.
For the Panthers, junior Lucas Romeo went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore Anthony Zarrella went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Sophomore Jimmy Milani earned the win in relief, giving up no runs and no hits in two innings of work.
Wilmington got out to an early 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning with three RBI single. The Panthers would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Romeo came around to score from second on a Wildcat error.
In the top of the sixth, Wilmington would extend their lead to 5-1 on a Mike Godwin run scored from third on a wild pitch and a Bryan Woolford solo home run to left field.
The Panthers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, making the score 5-4 in favor of Wilmington. Romeo would drive in two of the three runs with a two-run triple, while senior Trevor Thorstensen drove in the third run of the inning with a single to left.
In Adelphi's half of the seventh inning, Zarrella would tie the score at 5-5 with a run-scoring triple to center field, his fifth triple of the season. Junior Justin Farnum would then reach on an error from Wilmington, scoring Zarrella and the game's eventual game-winning run.
For the Wildcats, Godwin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Woolford went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Tim Racek took the loss in relief, giving up two earned runs in 0.2 innings of work.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, Saturday May 21, when they play the winner of second-seeded Franklin Pierce University and fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut State University at 11:00 a.m.
