May 1, 2011

Game One/Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell on Sunday, May 1 in their regular season finale. The Riverhawks jumped on the Panthers early in both games, securing wins of 5-2 and 10-3. With the losses Adelphi closing out the regular season at 27-23 overall and 19-11 in the Northeast-10.

Game One
UML jumped on Adelphi early in the first inning, putting three runs on the board before the Panthers recorded a single out and led, 3-0 after one. Adelphi would settle down from there as Katie Andrews held UML scoreless for the next five innings.

The Panthers cut the lead to two runs, 3-1 in the bottom of the third when Emily Dorko scored off of an Amy Ogden single to left and then chopped the lead again in the bottom of the fifth on a Riverhawk error, 3-2.

Unfortunately, UML would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh, courtesy of a one out double, to push the lead to 5-2. The Panthers had three base runners in the bottom of the seventh, but could not muster a response, falling 5-2.

Leighann Bell was charged with the loss, giving up three runs in the first, while Andrews pitched seven full innings of relief, striking out three and giving up just three hits.

Adelphi had no shortage of base runners, out hitting UML, 10-7 as Dorko was 3-4 with two runs scored and Ogden and Shay Craig were each 2-4.

Game Two
The Riverhawks led off game two with a single run, taking advantage of two singles in the top of the first, 1-0. However, UML would do some real damage in the top of the third, scoring nine runs on six hits and two Adelphi errors, including a two RBI double.

Adelphi started to chip away in the bottom of the fourth, getting on the board thanks to a Deandra Leo single that drove in Amanda Krier. The Panthers would get two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Jeanine Leo two run double, making the score 10-3. But, that was as close as the Panthers would get, falling by the same score.

Bell again took the loss, tossing 2.2 innings of softball and striking out four. Andrews came on in relief again, throwing 4.1 innings and striking out three, while scattering five hits. Jeanine Leo was 2-4 with two RBI, while Deandra Leo was 2-3 with an RBI.

The Panthers will return to action when they open play in the Northeast-10 Playoffs.
