Baseball Takes Two From UMass Lowell On The Road

Game One/Game Two

Lowell, Mass. - The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Lowell, Mass. this afternoon to take on the River Hawks of UMass Lowell in a conference doubleheader. Adelphi had two come from behind victories to complete the sweep. Adelphi improves to 19-8-1 and 9-3 in the league, while UML drops to 22-5 and 9-3.

Game One

For the Panthers, senior Richard McCarren went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while junior Craig Matteo went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Robert Nixon improved to 5-1, throwing a complete game and striking out nine in the process.

Lowell got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Cam Kneeland delivered a single to right center. McCarren would even the score for Adelphi in the top half of the third with an RBI single to left.

In the next half inning, the River Hawks would get that run back as James Katsiroubas sent a run scoring single to left, putting Lowell up 2-1. UML would extend their lead by one more run on another RBI single from Katsiroubas.

In the Adelphi eighth, McCarren would drive in his second run of the game with an RBI ground out, cutting the River Hawks' lead to one run. In the ninth inning, junior Lucas Romeo would tie the score at 3-3 with an RBI single, which was then followed by the eventual game-winning RBI from Matteo with a double to left center.

For the River Hawks, Katsiroubas finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Matt Jacobs went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Dallas Nunes suffered the loss in relief, giving up two runs in one inning of work.

Game Two

For the Panthers, senior Trevor Thorstensen went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a home run, while Matteo finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in. Senior Mike Scudero took the no-decision, striking out six in 6.2 innings.

The Panthers put up four runs in the first two innings to take on early lead over the River Hawks. Sophomore Anthony Zarrella drove in the first run with an RBI single in the first, while Thorstensen drove in two of the three in the second inning with a two-run shot.

Rob Noe would put UML on the board with a two-run single down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth inning. A Kneeland RBI single, followed Sean Burns scoring on an error tied the score at 4-4 in the sixth.

In the following inning, Burns would get UML a one-run lead with an RBI single down the left field line.

Once again trailing headed into the ninth, the Panthers answered with two runs to come away with the victory. Thorstensen delivered the game-tying RBI single, while graduate student Omar Velazquez came through with the game-winning hit with an RBI single through the left side.

For the River Hawks, Noe went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Kneeland finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Taylor Robinson took the loss, striking out seven and giving up 10 hits in 8.1 innings.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 10, when they travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Golden Knights of St. Rose College at 1:00 p.m.
