Game One/Game Two

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted No. 7 Franklin Pierce University this afternoon in a conference contest on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers took both games from the Ravens, 6-1 and 5-1, for the sweep. Adelphi improves to 28-11-2 and 16-6-1, while FPU drops to 33-9 and 17-5.
Game One
For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, while sophomore Anthony Zarrella went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Robert Nixon tossed a complete game, striking out four and letting up just one earned run. In the process, Nixon also set the program's record for career wins with 24.
Franklin Pierce got on the board in the first inning when Mike Dowd sent an RBI single to right field for the early 1-0 lead. Adelphi would get out of trouble with the bases loaded and no outs when Velazquez threw out Mike Munoz at the plate trying to tag from third.
The Panthers would come back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Junior Justin Farnum would drive in the first run with an RBI single to right, while Zarrella delivered a two-run double to left, making the score 3-1.
In the second inning, the Panthers would extend their lead to 4-1 when junior Craig Matteo sent an RBI single up the middle. In the sixth inning, senior Trevor Thorstensen would manufacture both Panther runs on his own. First he came up with an RBI double and then eventually scored from third on a wild pitch.
For the Ravens, Dan Hennigan went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Derek Ingui finished 2-for-4. Steven Hathaway suffered the loss, giving up six earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Game Two
For the Panthers, Farnum went 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, while Zarrella went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a solo home run. Senior Mike Scudero struck out four batters and gave up just one earned for the complete game win.
In the second game, it was Adelphi who struck first when junior Jamie Liebowitz hit an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the first for an early Panther lead. Franklin Pierce would answer right back in the next half inning when Ingui sent a solo home run over the left field fence.
In the Panther sixth, Zarrella would break the 1-1 tie with an RBI base hit up the middle. In the next inning, senior Richard McCarren came up with a big RBI double down the right field line, which was then followed up by a Farnum RBI single up the middle.
Adelphi would score their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Zarrella sent a towering shot to right field for a solo shot.
For the Ravens, Hennigan finished 2-for-3, while Ingui went 2-for-3 with a home run. Gregg Downing took the loss, surrendering five earned runs in seven innings on the hill.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, May 1, when they host St. Anselm College at 2:00 p.m.
