The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Manchester, N.H. this afternoon for a conference doubleheader versus the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University. The Panthers took both games of the doubleheader, improves to 24-10-2 and 13-5-1 in the NE-10, while SNHU falls to 19-19 and 7-11.
Game One
For the Panthers, sophomore Anthony Zarrella went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while freshman Chad Houghton went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Robert Nixon struck out nine and gave up 10 hits for the complete game win.
The Panthers would score first, in the top of the fourth inning, when senior Matt Barle hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the early lead. SNHU would then take a 2-1 lead after the sixth inning with back-to-back RBI hits in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the top half of the eighth, Adelphi would score three runs and break the game wide open. A Houghton RBI single through the right side would tie the game at 2-2, which was then followed by a two-run shot from Zarrella over the left field fence for the eventual game-winnings runs.
For the Penmen, Jamie Wollerman went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Jon Massad went 1-for-3 with an RBI. On the mound, Derrick Slyvester took the loss, striking out seven in eight innings of work.
Game Two
For the Panthers, senior Richard McCarren went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, and a home run, while graduate student Omar Velazquez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run. Freshman Stephen Bove threw all nine innings with seven strikeouts for the win.
Adelphi got started right away in the top of the first inning when McCarren sent a two-run shot over the left field fence. Albert Stanton would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the first when he scored from third on an Adelphi throwing error.
In the top of the third, Velazquez would deliver a solo shot, pushing Adelphi's lead to 3-1. Stanton would then send a double to center field in the third inning to get within 3-2, SNHU's final run of the game.
Adelphi would add two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single from McCarren and an RBI double from junior Justin Farnum.
For the Penmen, Chris O'Neil went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Stanton went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Brad Monroe surrendered two earned runs and struck out 11 in seven innings for the loss.
The Panthers return to action on Monday, April 25, when they host Felician College at 3:30 p.m.
