Game One/Game Two
Albany, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Albany, New York on Thursday, April 21 to take on Northeast-10 Conference northern rival St. Rose. Adelphi out hit the Golden Knights in game one to the tune of, 14-7 and followed that up with a strong pitching performance to take a 5-2 win in game two. With the sweep the Panthers are now 18-20 overall and 12-8 in conference action.
Game One
Saint Rose went up 3-0 in the bottom of the second, getting two runs on a single and another courtesy of an Adelphi miscue. The Panthers answered back with three runs of their own in the top of the third, including two off the bat of Amanda Krier when her double plated Heather Salerno and Shay Craig. Deandra Leo brought home Adelphi's third run of the inning.
The Golden Knights scored three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on two singles and stole home. However, Adelphi finally got their bats going in the top of the fourth, leading to five runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Leo capped off the fifth with a solo home run, while Krier roped a two-run double to left center just before Leo's blast. In the sixth, Craig scored on a wild pitch and designated player Paige Rhodes plated a pair via a single. Leo then punctuated things with a three-run drive in the seventh.
Craig was 4-5 with four runs, while Leo was 3-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Krier was also strong at the plate, going 3-5 with four runs and three RBI. Leighann Bell picked up the win, her ninth of the season, after throwing seven innings and striking out eight.
Game Two
In the finale, freshman right-hander Katie Andrews took a no-hitter into the fifth inning for the Panthers. However, Andrews issued a walk and back-to-back infield singles followed to load the bases and a St. Rose single tied the action at two. Adelphi's two runs came in the first, on a Craig sacrifice fly and in the third on a Salerno single that plated Amy Ogden.
The Panthers struck again late in the game by sending seven batters to the plate in a three run, eighth inning that allowed them to complete the sweep. Leo put things away with a two-run single.
Andrews threw the entire eight innings, striking out 13 and giving up just four hits, while Emily Dorko paced the Panthers at the plate, going 2-3 with a run.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts to take on Bentley.
