April 2, 2011

Box Score

West Haven, CT - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to West Haven, Connecticut to take on former East Coast Conference and current Northeast-10 rival New Haven in a double header. The Chargers put Adelphi in 1-0 holes after the first inning of play in both games and the Panthers could not recover, falling 5-1 and 10-2. With the losses Adelphi falls to 6-14 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10, while New Haven improves to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Game One
New Haven took advantage of a Panther throwing error in the bottom of the first to put a runner and pushed the runner across with a single later in the inning. The Chargers tacked on a second run in the bottom, taking advantage of two singles in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers cut the lead in half when Courtney Sullivan hit a one out home run over the left field wall in the top of the fifth. Unfortunately that was as close as Adelphi would get as the Chargers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits to take a 5-1 lead and the game.

Leighann Bell threw six innings, striking out and walking one, while surrendering seven hits and four earned runs in her eighth loss of the season. The Panthers scattered four hits in the loss as Heather Salerno, Amanda Krier and Paige Rhodes managed hits, along with Sullivan.

Game Two
The Chargers again scored in the first, taking advantage of three straight walks to load the bases before a sacrifice fly scored New Haven's first run. This time Adelphi answered back, taking a 2-1 lead on a Jeanine Leo two run bomb to center that brought home Rhodes, who gained first base after being hit by a pitch.

However, the lead was short lived as New Haven used two home runs in the bottom of the second to bring four runners across the plate and take a 5-2 lead. The Chargers would extend the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the third with three hits in that half of the inning and got three more hits and one run in the bottom of the fourth to push their advantage to 9-2.

The Panthers did not have an answer for New Haven as their bats went silent, producing just three hits in the final four innings of play, before falling 10-2. Katie Andrews was credited with her third loss of the season, tossing 1.2 innings of softball, striking out one, walking three and giving up five earned runs.

Marisa Romeo threw the final 3.1 innings, striking out one and allowing just two runs on eight hits. Shay Craig came alive in the loss, going 3-3, while Leo and Elizabeth Lindner had Adelphi's other two hits.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, April 3 when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut to take on Southern Connecticut State University.
