Softball Splits With Southern New Hampshire

April 16, 2011

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to Southern New Hampshire (SNHU) in a Northeast-10 contest on Saturday, April 16. The Panthers were blanked in a 3-0 game one loss, but rallied to pick up a 5-2 victory in game two. With the split Adelphi is now 16-18 overall and 10-6 in conference action, while SNHU is 14-16 and 11-7 in the NE-10.

Game One
Game one remained scoreless for the first two innings, as both teams threatened but could not produce any runs. SNHU led off the top of the third with a home run and tacked on another run after smacking back-to-back doubles, taking a 2-0 advantage after three and a half innings.

The visitors would get a third run in the fifth on another solo shot and that was all SNHU would need as Adelphi would go hit less from the second to the sixth inning, finally getting a base runner in the seventh, before retiring in order.

Katie Andrews threw six innings of work, striking out eight and scattering eight his in the loss, while teammate Marissa Romeo tossed the seventh, giving up just one hit in a scoreless inning of work.

Emily Dorko and Heather Salerno were responsible for all three Panther hits. Dorko was 2-3 at the plate, while Salerno was 1-3.

Game Two
Adelphi struck first in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Jeanine Leo led off the inning with a double to left and crossed home plate a batter later when Andrews smacked a single. A Dorko bunt gave Adelphi runners at first and second and a Salerno double brought home Andrews, while a Shay Craig sacrifice bunt would get Dorko across the plate, 3-0.

SNHU got two runs back in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a hit by pitch and walk to start the inning. The Penmen runs came across on back-to-back singles, making it a one run game, 3-2.

Adelphi answered back in the bottom of the fifth when Salerno led things off with a walk and then stole second and third. An Amanda Krier single brought Salerno across home, while a Jeanine Leo two out single would bring Krier across, 5-2.

Leighann Bell would do the rest of the work for Adelphi, throwing seven innings, striking out 10 and walking just one batter in a four hit win. Both Krier and Jeanine Leo were 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Andrews was 1-1 with an RBI and a run scored.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 17 when they play host to Saint Anselm at 12:00 pm in Garden City.
