Baseball Defeats St. Anselm, 5-2, Second Game Postponed

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Hawks of St. Anselm College this afternoon in a conference doubleheader. Adelphi took game one, 5-2, while the second game was called due to rain. Adelphi improves to 21-10-1 and 10-5 in the NE-10, while St. Anselm falls to 16-16 and 6-8.

For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases, while sophomore Anthony Zarrella went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Senior Robert Nixon threw a complete game, letting up two earned runs, and striking out five.

Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when junior Jamie Liebowitz scored from third on a well executed double steal. St. Anselm would get that run back in the next half inning when Tito Lluberes scored from third on a wild pitch.

In the fourth inning, St. Anselm's Dan Lagasse hit a triple to center field scoring the Hawks' second run and giving them a 2-1 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Adelphi broke the game wide open with three runs, highlighted by a two-run triple to left from Zarrella.

The Panthers would add their fifth run in the bottom of the seventh inning when senior Richard McCarren plated Velazquez with an RBI single up the middle.

For the Hawks, TJ Murphy went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Lagasse went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Neil Hesek suffered the loss on the hill, giving up nine hits and five runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings of work.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 17, when they travel to take on No. 5 Southern Connecticut State University at 1:00 p.m.
