The Adelphi University baseball traveled to take on The Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose this afternoon in a doubleheader. Adelphi dropped the first game, 4-3, but bounced back to win the second game, 6-1. Adelphi now stands at 20-9-1 and 9-4 in the Northeast-10.
Game One
For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while senior Trevor Thorstensen went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez struck out nine in six innings of work for the no-decision.
St. Rose put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Caleb Gleason. The Panthers got to within one run in the seventh inning when Velazquez delivered a two-run double.
Junior Justin Farnum would tie the score up for Adelphi in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI ground out. In the bottom half of the ninth, Nikko Wahl drew a bases loaded walk with the bases loaded for the game-winning run.
For the Golden Knights, Garrett Keenan went 3-for-5, while Gleason finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Ryan Harper allowed one earned run in one inning for the win in relief.
Game Two
For the Panthers, Jamie Liebowitz went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a home run, while Velazquez went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Stephen Bove threw all seven innings and struck out five for the victory.
Adelphi would take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle. Liebowitz would drive in three of Adelphi's five runs in the fourth inning with a three-run blast to right field. Velazquez and junior Craig Matteo drove in the other two Panther runs with sacrifice flies.
St. Rose would prevent the Panther shut out in the fifth inning with a run scored on an Adelphi throwing error.
For the Golden Knights, A.J. Capone went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Brandon Jones finished 1-for-3. Ryan Donovan suffered the loss, giving up six earned in 3.2 innings.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, April 13, when they host the Golden Knights at 3:30 p.m.
