Game One/Game Two

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted St. Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon in a non-conference double header. STAC took game one, 7-5, while both teams tied the second game, 1-1. The second game was called due to darkness. STAC is now 2-2-1, while Adelphi sits 3-2-1.
Game One
For the Panthers, junior Craig Matteo went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI, while graduate student Omar Velazquez finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Jimmy Milani suffered the loss on the mound, giving up two runs (one earned) in 0.1 innings of work.
The Panthers got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Matteo hit a triple down the third base line to score two. STAC would then cut the Panthers' lead in half when Nicholas Barbalato drove in the Spartans' first run on an RBI bunt single. The Spartans took the lead in the next top half of the inning with two RBI singles to go up 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Trevor Thorstensen sent a double over the center fielder's head to plate Matteo and even the score at 3-3. Velazquez would then score Thorstensen from second on a single to give the lead back to Adelphi.
STAC would break the game open in the eighth inning, putting up three runs on one hit, highlighted by a Vincent Malzahn RBI bunt single.
Adelphi would cut the lead to 6-5 with a run in the bottom half of the inning but it wasn't enough as STAC added an insurance run in the ninth to hold on for the victory.
For the Spartans, Barbalato went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while George Wargo finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored as well. Joe Klemowitz earned the win, striking out three in 2.2 innings.
Game Two
For the Panthers, sophomore Thomas Torregrossa finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while classmate Anthony Zarrella also went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Mike Scudero threw a solid game, giving up one run and striking out six in seven innings of work.
Adelphi scored their run early as Torregrossa drove a single up the middle with two outs to score Zarrella from third. Scudero would then hold the Spartans scoreless until the top of the seventh inning.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Derek Hirsch delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle to score the game-tying run. The game was then called due to darkness.
For the Spartans, Barbalato went 1-for-3 and Hirch went 1-for-1 with the lone RBI. Sean Marsiglia struck out six over six innings in the no-decision.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, March 8 when they host Caldwell College in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m.
