Game One/Game Two
Brookville, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University softball team traveled across town to take on former East Coast Conference rival C.W. Post in a double header on Monday, March 28. The Panthers scored first in game one, but could not quiet the Pioneers, falling 3-1. Adelphi ground out five hits in game two, but still came up short falling 3-0, which dropped their overall record to 6-12.
Game One
Amy Ogden led off game one with a single and advanced to third just two batters later on a Shay Craig single, giving Adelphi runners at the corners. Deandra Leo was the next batter up and bunted Ogden home and Craig over to third, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately Adelphi could not take advantage of the situation as Amanda Krier ended the inning, striking out.
Leighann Bell was able to keep the Pioneers off the board for the next four innings, allowing Adelphi to take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Bell induced a ground out for the first out, but the next two C.W. Post batters reached base on singles. With two on the next hitter stroked another single, scoring the Pioneers first run and knotting the game at one.
Bell got a strike out, giving Adelphi two outs, but the Pioneers rallied as the next two players hit two out singles, scoring two more runs and giving C.W. Post a 3-1 lead. That was more then enough for Sarah Kiser, who did not allow a runner past second in the final two innings to secure the win for C.W. Post.
Bell, who was credited with her first loss in three appearances, struck out seven and walked none, scattering eight hits. Offensively, Adelphi registered three hits, two in the first by Ogden and Craig and one in the fourth by Krier.
Game Two
C.W. Post got on the board first in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a lead off walk and an error that put two runners on base. Both runners were brought home on a one out single and the third run scored courtesy of a one out double, 3-0.
Adelphi managed five hits in the game and put a runner on third in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Ogden reached on a single and a stolen base in the fourth, but could not reach home, while Dorko reached first on a bunt, stole second and a Craig single moved her to third. In the seventh it was Paige Rhodes who stood on third base but could not get home.
Marisa Romeo started the game for Adelphi, throwing one inning, striking out one, and walking one while collecting the loss. Katie Andrews came out and tossed five inning of shut out softball, picking up three strike outs and allowing just two hits.
Ogden, Craig and Leo had one hit each in the loss, while Dorko and Andrews also picked up a hit.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 2 when they travel to West Haven, Connecticut for a double header with New Haven.
