Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University softball team played host to American International College (AIC) on Saturday, March 26 in their Northeast-10 Conference opener. The Panthers held the Yellowjackets to four hits in a 3-1 victory in game one, but fell short in eight innings in the second contest, 4-1. With the split Adelphi is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.
Game One
AIC opened the scoring in the top half of the second inning, putting a runner on third immediately and then driving the run in two hitters later on a fielders choice. The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases and then Shay Craig got one run across the plate with a single, knotting the game at one.
In the bottom of the third the Panthers got another run after Deandra Leo doubled to left, then Shannon Maloney came on to pinch run, scoring on a passed ball later in the inning, making the score 2-1. Adelphi tacked on a third run in the bottom of the fourth when Amanda Krier singled home Amy Ogden, who led off the inning with a walk and then stole second.
The, 3-1 lead was more then enough breathing room for Leighann Bell, who went the distance, striking out four and giving up just four hits in the win. Ogden led the offense, going 2-2 with a run scored, while Paige Rhodes was 2-3.
Game Two
After three scoreless innings, AIC again got on the board first, leading off the top of the fourth with a home run, to take an early 1-0 lead. Adelphi answered back in the bottom of the fifth loading the bases for Krier, who walked home the tying run, 1-1.
The game would stay deadlocked at one all, pushing the contest into extra innings when AIC struck again, when the Yellowjackets took advantage of two inning opening walks and a double to put three runs on the board and take a 4-1 lead.
Adelphi opened the bottom of the eighth with three straight hits, loading the bases with no outs. However, the Yellowjackets induced a fielders choice, which became an out at home and then struck the final two batters out looking, ending the game and handing Adelphi a 4-1 loss.
Katie Andrews drew a no decision, throwing seven innings, giving up just one run and striking out four, while Natalie Camarda was credited with the loss after throwing just a third of an inning and giving up two hits. Marisa Romeo closed out the game for the Panthers, getting two outs, striking out one. Ogden picked up two of Adelphi's eight hits, while the other five were scattered around, including one to Krier who had an RBI.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, March 27 when they travel to Oakdale, New York to take on Dowling College in a non-conference match-up.
