The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Skyhawks of Stonehill College this afternoon at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers took both games and Head Coach Dom Scala won his 200th career game in the process. Adelphi improves to 12-7-1 and 2-2 in the league, while Stonehill falls to 14-7 and 0-2.
Game One
For the Panthers, freshman Richard Mejia went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while junior Craig Matteo finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Robert Nixon threw a complete game two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.
Adelphi got their first run in the bottom half of the first inning when graduate student Omar Velazquez scored on a pass ball. Senior Trevor Thorstensen provided the second Panther run in the second inning with an RBI sacrifice bunt.
Senior Richard McCarren drove in the third Panther run in the fifth with an RBI double, while junior Justin Farnum picked up an RBI on ground out to second.
The Panthers would add their fifth run in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Mejia.
For the Skyhawks, Nick Nardacci and Michael White each went 1-for-3, while Alex McCormick took the loss, striking out five in seven innings of work.
Game Two
For the Panthers, McCarren drove in two of the Panthers' four runs, while senior Mike Scudero struck out eight in seven innings of work for the win. Sophomore Jimmy Milani picked up the save in 0.1 of an inning.
Stonehill got on the board first in the second inning on an RBI double from Billy Karalis. Adelphi would even the score in the sixth inning when McCarren drove in Velazquez on an RBI ground out to second.
In the seventh, junior Lucas Romeo and Thorstensen each collected RBI doubles to give Adelphi a 4-3 lead headed into the top of the ninth.
Stonehill would get two runs on on two RBI singles up the middle but it wasn't enough as Adelphi held on for the doubleheader sweep.
For the Skyhawks, Mike Zeiner went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Angelo Bruno went 3-for-5 with an RBI. On the mound, Bryan Galligan suffered the loss, giving up three earned in seven innings.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, March 27, when they travel to take on Assumption College at 1:00 p.m.
