Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Mercy In Season-Opener

The Adelphi University baseball hosted the Mavericks of Mercy College this afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers took game one, 9-0, and came up short in game two, 6-2. Both teams now stand at 1-1.

Game One

For the Panthers, senior Trevor Thorstensen went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while junior T.J. Humrich went 2-for-3 with a run a scored and an RBI. Senior Robert Nixon eanred the win, striking out five in five innings of work and giving up just one hit.

The Panthers came out in the bottom half of the first inning and put up three runs which was highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore Anthony Zarrella. Junior Jaime Liebowitz would produce both runs in the third for Adelphi with a two-run single to right-center.

In the fourth, Thorstensen would drive in the first run with an RBI single and then scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead at the time.

For the Mavericks, Graig Lauricella went 2-for-4, while John Tricario took the loss on the mound giving up four earned runs in three innings.

Game Two

For the Panthers, Thorstensen and sophomore Nick Pomo-Roman each went 2-for-3 with a run driven in, and freshman Chad Houghton finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Mike Scudero took the loss, giving up three earned in 2.1 innings, while striking out five.

Mercy's big inning came in the third when they put up four runs. The first Maverick run came on a wild pitch, the next two on RBI singles, and the fourth on a bases loaded walk.

Down 5-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Panthers answered back with two runs on RBI singles from Thorstensen and Pomo-Roman, but it wasn't enough as Mercy held Adelphi scoreless for the rest of the game.

For the Mavericks, Matt Walsh finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored, while Julio Torres went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. On the mound, Tyler Savin got the win, striking out one in 3.1 innings of work.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 2 when they host non-conference opponent Dowling College at 3:00 p.m.
