The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Colchester, Vermont on Saturday, November 5 to close out the regular season against Northeast-10 foe St. Michael's College. The Panthers found themselves in a 2-0 hole, but dug their way out to secure a hard fought 3-2 victory. With the win Adelphi closes out the 2011 regular season with a record of 19-7 overall and 12-3 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights fall to 14-19 and 3-12 in the conference.
Chelsea Overholt and
Patawe Simms led five Panthers into double figure kills with 17 and 15 respectively, while both
Emily Dorko and
Samantha Rico chipped in 10 and
Kaitlyn DeStefano added 11.
Katie Bryson had collected 50 set assists, while
Bianca Hernandez led the defense with 26 digs and Overholt had 15.
Bree Popham had a team-high five service aces, accounting for half of Adelphi's total of 10.
The teams faced 13 ties and seven lead changes in the opener, with St. Michael's
Samantha Clairemont's kill pushing the hosts in front, 11-5, before Adelphi rallied for a 17-16 edge on an Overholt kill. The Panthers led by a 24-23 count, but the Purple Knights scored four of the last five points, including a block for the winning point, 27-25. Eleven more ties ensued in the second set, as Saint Michael's eventually grabbed a 24-19 lead. But Adelphi would not quit, as the Panthers scored the next five points, knotting the game at 24. However, consecutive kills from the Purple Knights made it 2-0 with a 26-24 win.
Adelphi put Purple Knights into an early four-point hole in the third set, but St. Michael's bounced back and held a 22-18 advantage, needing just three points to clinch the sweep, but Adelphi rattled off seven of the final eight points to steal the third game, 25-23. Adelphi snapped a three-all tie and powered away from the Purple Knights for a sizeable fourth-set victory, 25-11. But, the fifth and deciding set was a different story, with seven more deadlocks. After the Panthers notched the first three points and still held a 6-3 advantage, Saint Michael's went on a 5-1 run to grab an 8-7 lead. However, Adelphi would creep back in front 14-13, but the hosts fended off match point to knot the score at 14, but the Panthers notched two straight kills to finish off the come from behind victory.
The Brown and Gold secured the third seed in the Northeast-10 tournament with the win and will host the sixth seed on Tuesday, November 8 in quarterfinal action.
