Volleyball Stuns #2 Stonehill, 3-0 Advances to The NE-10 Championship

The Panthers took care of Stonehill in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18.

The Adelphi University volleyball team will play for a Northeast-10 Tournament title for the second time in three years thanks to a straight set win over #2 Stonehill College on Friday, November 11 in the semifinals in Easton, Massachusetts. The Panthers took care of the Skyhawks in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18 to avenge an October 16 loss to Stonehill. WIth the win Adelphi impvores to 21-7, while Stonehill  falls to 27-6 and await word from the NCAA Regional Committee on their seed for the NCAA tournament.

Chelsea Overholt and Samantha Rico led the Adelphi effort offensively with 11 kills each, while Emily Doko added eight. Katie Bryson picked up 36 assists while running the Panther offense and Bianca Hernandez led all players with 19 digs and Overholt added 12. Kaitlyn DeStefano six blocks and Rico picked up five in the victory.

Adelphi led 5-1 early in game one, but Stonehill answered right back, knotting the game at eight on an Emily Iverson kill. There would be eight more ties in the first game, with the final tie coming at 21 all on an Adelphi service error. Two straight kills from Rico got the Panthers back on track and triggered a 4-0 run that led to a 25-21 game one victory.

The second game was much tighter in the early going then the first and saw eight ties in the first 28 points. Adelphi would use a 3-0 run to squeak out a three point lead, 17-14, but still only led by two, 20-18 late. However, the Brown and Gold used a 5-3 rally over the final points, including kills from Rico and Patawe Simms to escape with a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead.

The third game mirrored the first, as Adelphi surged out to a 6-1 lead, but the Skyhawks battled back and tied the game at six all. However, this time the Panthers slipped out to a 10-7 lead on a Stonehill error and would not trail the rest of the way, pulling out a 25-18 victory and taking the match, 3-0.

Adelphi will now face #4 St. Rose on Saturday, November 12 in the NE-10 Championship game in Easton, Massachusetts and you can follow the action live here.
