Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team earned a much-needed win by way of a 2-1 margin over Stonehill College on Saturday's Senior Night at Motamed Field, wrapping up a perfect 5-0 day for Panthers athletics during Family Weekend. The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak to keep their playoff hopes alive, thanks largely to clutch goals by seniors
Julianne Gerbino and
Jeanette Heimerle. Adelphi climbs to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Stonehill drops to 7-8 and 2-5 in league competition.
During pregame ceremonies, Adelphi honored its nine seniors as they prepared to play the final regular season home game of their careers:
Alexandra Dranoff, Gerbino, Heimerle,
Crystal Gray,
Brittany Kinsley,
Jessica Mulhern,
Michelle Maurici,
Theresa Murphy and
Lucia Vigliotti.
The Panthers saw two early scoring chances slip away in the form of a Gerbino shot that clanked off the post in the fourth minute, and then a
Jamie Ackerman penalty stroke that sailed wide left. The Skyhawks took advantage and claimed an early 1-0 lead as Jennifer Foley dodged two defenders while she sprinted down the right side for the wrist-shot goal at the 21:28 mark.
After a largely defensive battle for the rest of the first half, Gerbino charged out into the second half and put Adelphi on the board after a steal at midfield that led to a blast from just inside the circle six minutes after play resumed. The Skyhawks called a timeout to try to calm the Adelphi attack, but Heimerle foiled that plan by deflecting in the game-winner near the right post off a shot by Kinsley. The Panthers defense, along with solid goalkeeping by senior
Lucia Vigliotti, silenced Stonehill for the rest of the game and resulted in the 2-1 victory.
Vigliotti and Stonehill goalie Elizabeth Genovese each made three saves on the night, while Adelphi outshot the Skyhawks 11-5.
The Panthers close the regular season with two crucial road games next week, beginning at American International College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
