Baseball Takes Two From SNHU; Wins Game One Big, 8-1

Game One/Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. -

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University this afternoon in a conference doubleheader on Senior Day. Adelphi took both games, 8-1 and 3-1. The Panthers improve to 29-12 and 15-7 in the league, while SNHU falls to 15-22-1 and 8-12-1.

Game One

For the Panthers, senior Anthony Anzalone went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while junior Richard McCarren went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Keith Couch earned the win, throwing 7.2 innings, giving up no runs, and striking out 10.

In the bottom of the third inning, Adelphi broke the 0-0 tie with three runs. The first came on a RBI single from McCarren to right, followed by a RBI double from Anzalone to center. Senior Chris Weidlein drove in the third run on a RBI single up the middle.

AU would come right back in the next inning with three more runs. Sophomore Lucas Romeo would knock in classmate T.J. Humrich with an RBI double to center field for the first run of the inning. McCarren and Anzalone would once again drive in two more for the second and third runs.

Southern New Hampshire would get a run on the board in the top of the ninth when Jeff Giannino scored on a double play.

For the Penmen, Giannino went 1-for-1 with a run scored, while Jon Massad finished 1-for-2. Bryant Gauthier took the loss, giving up four earned over five innings, and striking out five.

Game Two

For the Panthers, McCarren went 3-for-4, while senior Justin Ciamillo went 1-for-3 with a home run. Junior Rober Nixon got the win, striking out five and giving up one run in eight innings of work.

The Panthers would get their first run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run from Ciamillo. AU would then take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Craig Matteo grounded into a double play, scoring classmate Justin Farnum.

The Penmen would come back the next inning to cut the lead in half when Jon Minucci delivered an RBI double.

Adelphi added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Anzalone.

For the Penmen, Tim Rines went 2-for-5, while Kevin Spatkowski went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Brad Monroe took the complete game loss, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they host Pace University in a conference match-up at 1:00 p.m.
