The #16 Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Hawks of St. Anselm College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The Panthers took both games, improving to 25-9 and 11-5 in the league, while the Hawks fall to 9-22 and 7-11.
Game One
For the Panthers, sophomore T.J. Humrich went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Anthony Anzalone went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Keith Couch got the win, throwing eight innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out seven.
Adelphi picked up one run in the top of the first on a RBI ground out from senior Chris Weidlein. In the following inning for the Panthers, Anzalone and classmate Justin Ciamillo both drew bases loaded walks.
The Panthers big inning came in the top of the fourth when they put up four runs on on three hits. Ciamillo and Humrich both produced RBI singles, while Weidlein and junior Trevor Thorstensen both had sacrifice fly outs.
St. Anselm would get on the board in the bottom half of the fourth when Matt Stone and James Garrigan delivered an RBI single each.
Sophomore Craig Matteo added two RBI in the sixth inning for the final two Panther runs.
Game Two
For the Panthers, Ciamillo went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while sophomore Justin Farnum went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Junior Robert Nixon went the distance for the win, giving up six hits and striking out 10.
St. Anselm would score first, in the bottom of the fourth, when TJ Murphy scored an unearned run on a Panther throwing error.
Ciamillo would drive a double to left center, scoring Farnum for the first run. In the following inning, junior Matt Barle delivered an RBI single which scored freshman Thomas Torregrossa for the eventual game-winning run.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow with a conference doubleheader at home against Stonehill College at 1:00 p.m.
