Baseball Splits Doubleheader With STAC

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas for the second straight day in a doubleheader this afternoon. The Panthers fell in game one, 7-0, but bounced back to take game two, 6-3. Adelphi improves to 3-1, while STAC sits at 1-3.

Game 1

For the Panthers, freshman Nick Pomo-Roman and sophomore Justin Farnum both went 1-for-3, as the Panthers only collected five hits as a team. Sophomore Chris Pabisch took the loss on the hill, going three innings, giving up three runs and striking out one.

The Spartans scored four of their seven runs in the fouth inning. Joe Antenucci started the inning off with a double and would later come around to score the first run for STAC. Ryan Spicer would drive in the next run with a single up the middle to put STAC up 2-0. The Spartans would get their final two runs on a bases loaded walk and a ground out to second base.

For the Spartans, Antenucci went 2-for-4 and scored two runs, while Fernando Peralta finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mike Aviles collected the win, going five innings and surrendering three hits.

Game 2

For Adelphi, senior Justin Ciamillo went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while also stealing three bases. Classmate Anthony Anzalone also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and driven in. Sophomore Michael Carletti pitched four innings to earn the win, striking out two in the process.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after putting up two runs in the second inning. Junior Trevor Thorstensen tripled and drove in Anzalone for the first Panther run, while sophomore Craig Matteo grounded out to the pitcher and drove in Thorstensen for the final run of the inning. Adelphi would put up two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead, only to have STAC answer back with three runs in the top of the fifth. The Spartans' big inning was highlighted by a two-run single to right by Andrew Ahn. The Panthers would add an insurance run in the sixth, holding on for the 6-3 victory.

For STAC, Ahn went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Matt Marotta finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mark Forchesato started for the Spartans, giving up three runs on seven hits, taking the loss.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow at home when they face Franklin Pierce University in a doubleheader starting at noon.
