Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University baseball team played host to C.W. Post on Saturday, May 2 in an East Coast Conference double header. The Panthers took game one, 4-2 on the strength of two RBI's from both Chris Weidlein and Matthew Kenney and blanked the Pioneers in game two, 6-0, thanks to seven strong innings from Mike Bartlett. The sweep gives Adelphi an overall record of 26-14 and a conference mark of 16-7.
Game One
C.W. Post jumped on Adelphi in the third inning, taking advantage of two Adelphi errors to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead. Adelphi answered right back in the top of the fourth as Ryan Boelsen and Bill Melillo reached base to lead off the inning and were doubled home by Weidlein. Justin Ciamillo managed to reach base next and both he and Weidlein were brought home by a Kenney double with no outs, giving Adelphi a 4-2 lead.
From there it was all Keith Couch, who went the distance, throwing all nine innings, allowing no earned runs, striking out four and walking two in his seventh win of the season.
Game Two
Adelphi pitching was again the story in game two as Bartlett tossed a gem, throwing seven innings of two hit baseball, striking out one. After three scoreless innings Adelphi scored three runs, two courtesy of a Melillo home run, that scored Boelsen. The third run crossed the plate thanks to a Kenny double that brought home Weidlein.
The Panthers tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Boelsen went yard, scoring Thomas Harper and Mike Tobia who reached base on back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. That was more then Bartlett needed as he gave up just one hit over the final three innings of work.
Adelphi closes out the regular season on Sunday, May 3 when they host C.W. Post in the conclusion of a three game set at noon.
