Game One/Game Two
Bronxville, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Bronxville, New York on Sunday, April 5 to finish up a three game set with Concordia College. The Panthers dropped game one, 4-2, snapping a nine-game winning streak, but Adelphi bounced right back, blanking the Clippers in game two, 5-0. With the split Adelphi is now 16-6 overall and 8-1 in East Coast Conference play, while Concordia sits at 15-16 overall and 7-4 in conference action.
Game One
The host Clippers jumped on Adelphi early in game one, starting the bottom of the first with two singles, which resulted in two runs thanks to a fielder's choice and a sacrifice. Concordia tacked on a third run in the bottom of the second, opening the inning with two walks and scoring a runner on a sacrifice fly, making the score 3-0.
Adelphi would cut the lead to just one run, 3-2, in the top of the fourth as Matthew Kenney opened the play with a single to right and Bill Melillo walked, giving the Panthers two runners. With two outs, Chris Weidlein doubled to left, scoring both Kenney and Melillo.
The Clippers managed to score an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to give themselves a two run cushion that would hold up, making the final, 4-2.
Kenney and Ryan Boelsen were each 2-4 at the plate, while Mike Bartlett was credited with the loss, after tossing seven innings of four run, four hit, six strikeout baseball.
Game Two
The second game was all about Rob Nixon, who threw a complete game, five hitter, striking out eight batters. Offensively the Panthers chipped away at Concordia, scoring one run in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
In the first a miscue by Concordia's second baseman on a Boelsen hit scored Rob Paccione, who had singled, advanced on an out and stolen third. In the fourth Adelphi loaded the bases on walks and made the score, 2-0 when Lucas Romeo was hit by a pitch.
Adelphi's lead moved to three runs, 3-0 in the fifth when a Melillo single to center scored Mike Tobia from third. In the sixth a Paccione double to left scored the Panthers fourth run as the fifth and final run of the game was scored by Justin Ciamillo who advanced home courtesy of a Romeo walk.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, April 7 when they travel to Flushing, New York for a 3:30 pm meeting with Queens College.
