Game One/Game Two
Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University baseball team opened the 2009 season on Saturday, February 28 when they hosted Franklin Pierce University in a double header on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Five Adelphi pitchers combined to throw a nine inning, six hit shut out in a 2-0 game one win, while the Ravens blanked the Panthers, 1-0 in game two. With the split Adelphi and Franklin Pierce both open the season at 1-1.
Game One
After three and a half scoreless innings, Rob Paccione opened up the bottom of the fourth with a single to right field and then stole second, advancing to third on a ground out by Mike Tobia. Chris Weidlein followed that up with a single to left that scored Paccione, giving Adelphi a 1-0 cushion.
Adelphi added a second run in the bottom of the eighth as Matt Kenney started things with a single and advanced on an error. Two batters later Kenney advanced to third on a ground out and then scored on a Franklin Pierce throwing error to give Adelphi a 2-0 edge.
That was all that the Panthers would need as five Adelphi hurlers combined to toss shut out the Ravens. Keith Couch got the win, throwing five innings of five hit baseball, striking out four. Mike Colonna picked up his first collegiate save as he went 1.2 innings, striking out one.
Weidlein posted the lone RBI for Adelphi as he went 2-4.
Game Two
The second game was a pitchers dual as Rob Nixon went six scoreless innings for Adelphi, striking out six and allowing just four hits to get the Panthers to the seventh inning tied, 0-0. Jake Potters added an inning of scoreless relief to get Adelphi into the eighth.
In the eighth Franklin Pierce got things started with a single from Hicks, who then stole second and third. Hicks would score two batters later on a single to right, giving the Ravens a 1-0 lead, which was more then Vazquez would need as he threw eight innings of scoreless baseball, striking out nine and allowing just four hits.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, March 3 when they play host to the University of New Haven at 3:00 pm.
