Baseball Rally Falls Short as Adelphi Falls, 6-5

Oakdale, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Oakdale, New York to take on the University of New Haven with a berth in the ECC finals on the line on Sunday, May 11. The Panthers trailed 5-1 after just two innings of action before knotting the game at five in the seventh before falling 6-5. The loss ends Adelphi's season at 25-25.

The Chargers roughed up starter Rob Nixon, scoring five runs in the first two innings of action on five hits. However Jake Potters tossed four innings of relief to right the ship as four Adelphi pitchers combined to throw eight innings of five hit, one run relief.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first, Chris Weidlein doubled home Rob DeGennaro to cut the margin to 3-1. New Haven added two more runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead but the Panthers kept chipping away, getting one run back in the bottom of the fourth as Thomas Harper tripled to center and crossed home on a Matt Kenney sacrifice fly.

Adelphi put a third run on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Harper took advantage of a New Haven error to reach base, scoring DeGennaro. The Panthers came all the way back in the seventh, knotting the game at five with two runs. Mike Mongiello singled, scoring DeGennaro and with the bases loaded Mike Testani was hit by a pitch, scoring the tying run, Weidlein.

The Chargers rallied in the ninth, taking a 6-5 lead. The Panthers came alive again in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with just one out, however Pat O'Neill ended the threat, hitting into a double play.

DeGennaro was 2-5 at the plate with three runs, while Weildein was 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
