Baseball Splits With Queens

Flushing, N.Y. - The Adelphi baseball team traveled to Flushing, New York on Saturday, April 26 for a doubleheader with East Coast Conference opponent Queens College. Adelphi picked up a 8-4 win in game one, but fell 1-0 in the second game. With the split Adelphi is 19-22 overall and 10-12 in the conference.

Game One

Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a Pat O'Neill single and added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a Mike Mongiello triple that scored Mike Testani and Ryan Boelsen. Queens countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within one, 3-2.

A Rob DeGennaro single in the seventh gave the Panthers a two run cushion, 4-2, but the Knights answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, knotting the game at four. After a scoreless eighth Adelphi put four runs on the board in the ninth, an outburst that was triggered by a Matt Kenney home run, to pick up an 8-4 win.

Bobby Lanigan threw 6.1 innings of of four run baseball, striking out six, while Mike McLasky tossed 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit, picking up the win.

Game Two

The second game was all about the pitching as Adelphi and Queens combined for one run and seven hits. Brian Honeyman was near perfect for Queens, throwing seven innings of shut out baseball, striking out seven Panthers and giving up just three hits in the win.

Keith Couch was near flawless in the loss, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up just four hits and striking out 10. THe lone Queens run was scored with two out in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Knights the win.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 27 when they play host to Queens College at 1:00 pm on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
