Baseball Takes Two From Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Dobbs Ferry, New York on Saturday, April 19 to take on Mercy College in an East Coast Conference match-up. The Panthers blanked Mercy in both games of a doubleheader, taking a 13-0 win in game one and a 4-0 win in game two. The Panthers improved to 16-20 overall and 8-10 in the ECC with the wins.

After two scoreless innings in the opener, Adelphi pushed across a run in the third on an RBI single by Bill Melillo. The Panthers added four runs in the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of walks and getting a two-run double from Robert Paccione.

Adelphi tacked on six more runs in the fifth on six hits to open up an 11-0 lead. The Panthers then added two more in the seventh, getting an RBI ground out from Ryan Boelsen and another on a wild pitch to round out the scoring.

Starter Bobby Lanigan went seven innings, striking out nine and allowing just four hits to earn the win.

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Melillo knocked in the first two with a base hit and Matthew Kenney plated the third run with a single to right field.

Adelphi added an unearned run in the third to make it 4-0. Panthers' starter Mike Scudero took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before it was broken up. Scudero finished the game with eight strikeouts to pick up the win.

The Mavericks and Panthers will close out their series with a single game on Sunday, April 20, at Adelphi beginning at 1:00 p.m.
