The Adelphi University baseball team played host to Concordia College in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Saturday, March 22 on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Bobby Lanigan and Mike Scudero both threw complete games, picking up identical 2-1 wins, helping the Panthers improve to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in the ECC. Concordia falls to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the losses.
Game One
The game remained scoreless through four and a half innings before Rob Paccione was hit by a pitch. Paccione then stole two bases to get into scoring position and crossed the plate on a Mike Colonna single, giving Adelphi a 1-0 edge.
n the bottom of the sixth Thomas Harper approached the plate with the bases loaded and drove in Adelphi's second run, making the score 2-0. That was all that Lanigan would need as he gave up just two hits in the next three innings to give Adelphi a 2-1 win.
Lanigan went the distance in the win, throwing nine innings and striking out 13, while giving up just five hits. Colonna and Boelsen were each 2-4 at the plate.
Game Two
After three scoreless innings, Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a triple down the right field line that brought one run in. The hit was the only hit the Clippers could muster in the inning. Scudero shut down Concordia for the next four innings, holding the Clippers to no runs on just two hits.
Adelphi kept it exciting, entering the bottom of the seventh down 1-0. Pat O'Neill opened the inning with a single and Joe Maranino single moved the runner to third. Mike Mongiello knotted the game at one with a single up the middle that scored a run. Two outs later Paccione stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and knocked a single to left center, securing a 2-1 win for Adelphi.
Scudero went seven innings, giving up just the one run, three hits and striking out seven. Paccione was the only Panther with multiple hits, going 2-4 with an RBI.
Adelphi returns to action on Monday, March 24 when they travel to Bronxville, New York for a 3:30 pm meeting with Concordia.
