Adelphi vs. Concordia | Adelphi vs. Dowling

Garden City, N.Y. - The No.3 Adelphi University baseball team edged No.2 Concordia, 5-4, in the first round of the NYCAC Tournament, only to fall to No.1 Dowling College, 13-1, in the second round. The Panthers will face the Clippers in a re-match tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at Dowling.

Adelphi exploded with an early 3-0 lead in game one against Concordia as senior Frank Alesia tripled to bring in senior Tom Sicari and juniors Brian Rath and Thomas Cali. The Panthers made it 4-0 in the second, this time with Rath driving home Cali on a base hit. Alesia crossed the plate on a sacrifice by Matt DeWitt in the third inning on what would be the final run for the Panthers. The Clippers got on board in the third inning, 5-1. Concordia gave Adelphi a scare in the bottom of the ninth, taking advantage of an error to help bring in three runners.

Senior Roger Mischel recorded the win, allowing seven hits, one run, one earned, walking one and striking out two.

In the afternoon game, Dowling dominated Adelphi, rattling off nine unanswered runs through the sixth inning. Offensively, the Golden Lions were led by Wilberto Ortiz and Billy Mottram who accounted for four RBI a piece. The Panthers only run came in the bottom of the sixth as Sicari doubled, advanced to third on a single by Alesia and came home on an error by the second baseman. Dowling added four more runs to finish the game, 13-1.

Richard Barry pitched the complete game for the Golden Lions, allowing six hits, one run, one earned, walking one and striking out eight.

Adelphi (24-16) will now face Concordia in a rematch tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at Dowling College's PAL Complex. Concordia defeated C.W. Post in the afternoon game to earn another round against the Panthers.
