Garden City, N.Y.- Sophomore Katherine Hock (Mineola, N.Y.) tallied five goals as the Adelphi women's lacrosse team topped Philadelphia University 13-8, in the 2003 ECAC Division II Championship, Saturday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers finish the season 10-2 while the Lady Rams conclude their season 9-7.
Junior Karen Sulinski (Huntington, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the game at the 26:02 mark to give the Panthers the early lead. Approximately one-minute later sophomore Katherine Hock scored to give Adelphi an early 2-0 lead. Philadelphia got on the board at the 23.05 mark with a goal by junior Melissa Schott. The Lady Rams scored once again at the 1:46 mark in the first half, while the Panthers scored three more goals to give Adelphi a 5-2 lead at the half.
Adelphi opened the second half with two back-to-back goals that put the Panthers ahead, 7-2. The Lady Rams fought back by scoring four goals in six minutes to put Philadelphia down by only one. Junior Katherine Hock scored the next two goals for the Panthers to open the lead to three. Junior Leigh Fennessey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored the next goal for Adelphi on an assist by senior Catherine Perez (Lyndhurst, N.J.) at the 13:48 mark to give the Panthers a 10-6 lead. Five minutes later freshman Jessica Marra (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored to give Adelphi the 11-6 advantage. With four minutes remaining in the game Philadelphia scored two consecutive goals to lessen the gap to three. Junior Jennifer Garone (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) scored two goals in the remaining 20 seconds to give Adelphi the final score of 13-8.
For the game, Perez tallied two goals and four assists and Garone had two goals.
Adelphi goalkeeper Josephine Coiro (W. Babylon, N.Y.) had 12 saves while Jill Martin had 16 saves for the Lady Rams.
The Panthers also had a 4-1 groundball advantage.
