Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team returned home on Wednesday night for their regular-season finale against rival Pace.
The game started fast, with six shots in the first fifteen minutes. Pace had the best early chance with the seventh shot of the game, but Peyton DeRouen made a sprawling save to keep the score even.
For the next ten minutes, the Panthers went on the attack behind Kayleigh Goodrich and Madison Apicella, but the Setters quickly countered. DeRouen continued to stay sharp in net and turned away every chance Pace put on goal.
The see-saw half continued, but neither team was able to convert on its offensive opportunities, and the game remained scoreless at halftime.
Adelphi came out of the break sharp and peppered Pace's keeper with shots, leading to a corner in the 56th minute. Sarah Winnegar's cross deflected off Goodrich and bounced right to the feet of Dylann Trahey. The senior collected the ball and fired a perfect shot into the bottom-left corner to put the Cats up one.
DeRosa's squad continued to attack, but several attempts from Apicella and Goodrich were saved.
As the game progressed, Pace began to gain momentum and earn some quality looks at goal. Fortunately for the Panthers, the Setters' shots either sailed high or wide, and Adelphi held on for the 1–0 victory.
The win clinched the No. 4 seed for Adelphi in the NE10 Championship. The Panthers will host Southern New Hampshire on Sunday at 4:00 PM in a quarterfinal match.
