Late Offensive Surge Powers Women's Soccer to NE10 Semifinal

Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi women's soccer team returned to the postseason on Sunday afternoon for a tilt with No. 5 seed Southern New Hampshire.

Right from the opening kick, the Panthers had the jump on the Penmen. For seemingly the entire first half, Adelphi controlled possession and generated multiple attempts at goal. While the home team had 10 shots to their opponent's zero, no goals were scored, but the writing was on the wall for the Brown and Gold.

Madison Apicella, Kayleigh Goodrich and Madison Howard kept the offensive pace going in the second half for Adelphi but they still could not find the back of the net.

Southern New Hampshire responded for the first time all game with a counterattack in the 55th minute, but Peyton DeRouen was sharp between the pipes, recording her only two saves of the match in a quick two-minute span.

Adelphi's defense stayed strong, giving the offense confidence and in the 76th minute it finally came through. A pass from Dylann Tracey found Apicella in the middle of the box. The senior danced around a pair of Penmen defenders and put a perfect shot into the bottom-right corner to give Adelphi a 1–0 lead.

Just five minutes later, the Panther offense struck again when Goodrich sent a beautiful cross to Crystal Knoell. The freshman forward took a touch and fired the second goal of the game past the SNHU keeper.

The Penmen tried to push their offense upfield but Adelphi's backline held firm as the Panthers secured a 2–0 quarterfinal victory.

Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will advance to the Northeast 10 semifinal where they will take on No. 1 seed Saint Anselm on Thursday at 1 p.m. in Manchester, N.H
