Jericho, N.Y. – Francis Lanuza and the men's golf program finished in first place at the Panther Invitational, held Thursday at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, N.Y.
The Panthers delivered a dominant team performance, finishing 33-over par — well ahead of the next closest team, Hofstra University, which finished at 62-over.
The tournament's individual champion, Lanuza, finished five-over par. It marks his first individual win of the season and the second of his career. The senior got off to a rough start, shooting seven-over in his first round, but in round two things changed, as he shot an impressive two-under in cold and windy conditions. After managing just one birdie in round one, he bounced back with seven birdies in round two, including one on his final hole — clinching the title.
Mitchell Archer tied for second place. Archer dazzled in round one, shooting an even-par 72 with four birdies. He maintained consistency on the front nine in round two, but ran into trouble on the back nine, finishing the tournament at eight-over.
Johnny Solari tied for fourth place, carding a 10-over across both rounds. Solari shot a 76 in round one and a 78 in round two, totaling four birdies and 19 pars over his 36 holes.
Freshmen Ike Rothman, Ahaan Dhir, Domenick Caponi, and Zeus Sara all finished in the top fifteen to help seal the team win. Rothman (+15) finished in 12th place with six birdies on the day. Dhir and Caponi (+16) tied for 13th, while Sara (+17) finished in a tie for 15th.
Dhir shot a 76 in round two, highlighted by two birdies on the back nine. In his first collegiate appearance, Caponi made a strong debut in round one scoring a 75, which included two birdies and an eagle on the par-4 11th hole. Sara added to the team's consistency with 19 pars over two rounds.
Head coach David Mattana and the Panthers wrap up their fall season on a high note. The team will now take a break before opening the spring portion of their schedule in March.
