Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Four in a Row! Apicella's Strike Leads Women's Soccer Over Saint Anselm, 2-1

Manchester, N.H. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team headed up to Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon to continue Northeast-10 play.

The game got off to a very quick start with the Hawks receiving two corner kicks in the first two minutes. The Panthers would respond with two of their own just a few minutes later and unlike their opponents were able to find the back of the net. Sarah Winnergar swung a ball in from the right corner where it found Sarah Kent who bodied the ball past the keeper for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the 'Cats, a foul in the box would led to a Saint Anselm penalty kick in the 11th minute which they were able to capitalize on and tie the game.

For the next 20 minutes, Adelphi would pepper the Hawks' goalkeeper with shots, but each time a save was made.

In the 38th minute, former NE10 player of the year Madison Apicella would retrieve the ball from outside the box, dribble around two Saint Anselm defenders and fire a missile with her right foot that soared over the outstretched goalie and into the back of the net to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead.

The Brown and Gold would take the lead into the half and in the second period would have to be more defensively minded. Saint Anselm would outshoot Adelphi seven to five in the half, but Peyton DeRouen was a brick wall as the back line of defense. Her clutch play as well as solid defense from the back line would leave the Saint Rose transfer with eight saves for the day and help the Panthers to a 2-1 victory, their fourth in a row.

The Adelphi women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they host Bentley for Alumni Day.
