Women’s Soccer Controls Game; Takes Down New Haven 1-0

Garden City, N.Y — Head Coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team welcomed New Haven to Motamed Field on Tuesday afternoon for their Northeast-10 home opener.

Before the game, the Panthers were joined by the Garden City Centennials girls' soccer club.

Adelphi quickly gained an offensive advantage, keeping the ball in the Chargers' end for a majority of the first half. Carly Issing and Gia Mandile would threaten early but their attempts sailed wide of the net. The 'Cats kept the pressure turned up but went into the half tied 0-0.

The second period told more of the same story with Adelphi dominating possession and not allowing New Haven any true scoring chances.

Adelphi would finally break through in the 59th minute when a header from a New Haven defender found Kayleigh Goodrich in the middle of the field. Goodrich would corral the ball and beat two Chargers before finding an open Madison Apicella. The former NE10 player of the year faked a shot, getting the goalkeeper to bite, and then sent the ball into the back of the empty net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The Brown and Gold kept the heat on for the rest of the match with Lola Kochanskyj and Sarah Winnegar flying down the left wing. The back line held firm and Peyton DeRouen would record another clean sheet as Adelphi snagged a 1-0 victory.

The Panthers outshot the Chargers 18-6 and held a six to three advantage on corner kicks.

The Adelphi women's soccer team will return to the field on Saturday when they travel to play Saint Anselm at noon.
