Flushing, N.Y. - For the second year in a row, the Adelphi University women's tennis team has a regional champion, or -- in this case -- champions.
After
Sanne Selmer Gilje accomplished the extraordinary feat of winning the ITA Division II Small College East Region Championship last fall,
Katarina Liedbeck and
Roisin Boyd officially took up the mantle on Monday as ITA East Region Women's Doubles Champions in 2023.
"I am extremely proud to win the tournament, especially alongside Roisin," Liedbeck said. "We've fought and played extremely well these last day and I'm so excited to see what we can bring to Georgia."
As the East Region's automatic qualifier, Liedbeck and Boyd will travel to Rome, Ga. to compete against their fellow regional champions from across the nation at the ITA Cup from October 12-16.
"I am really happy with how we performed over the past four days. We are looking forward to nationals in Georgia," commented Boyd -- who was named the NE10 Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row on Tuesday.
Entering the tournament field as the No. 6 seed, Liedbeck and Boyd ran the gamut of six consecutive doubles victories -- the last three of which came against the draw's Top 3 seeded pairs in ascending order.
First, in the quarterfinals, the first-year doubles partners won a convincing 8-4 decision over third-seeded Maja Makal and Saga Berggren of Queens.
Now playing a best-of-three in the semifinals against the No. 2 seed, Liedbeck and Boyd teamed up to defeat SNHU's Alina Kupfer and Verena Weindl in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.Â
With a poor forecast pushing the championship finals indoors, the soon-to-be doubles champions faced top-seeded Ebba Rosberg and Samanta Villegas Robles of STAC. Liedbeck and Boyd earned a key break at 5-all in the opening set to put the clinching serve on their racket, eventually leading toward a title-winning 7-5, 6-2 result.
"I am so proud of Katarina and Roisin for their hard work at regionals this weekend," Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas stated. "They have great chemistry as a pair and their level of play throughout the tournament was impressive. We are eager to keep building on this, as we continue conference play and head to nationals later next month."
Another first-year tandem of
Astrid Bergh and
Carolina Chaves also made waves in their ITA debut playing together. As an unseeded team, Bergh and Chaves upset No. 11 Risako Umekuni and Lucia Placidi of University of New Haven by an 8-3 scoreline in the Round of 32.
On a road that nearly pitted them against their fellow teammates Liedbeck and Boyd in the semifinals, Bergh and Chaves came up short in the quarterfinal round, losing an 8-1 decision to SNHU's No. 2 seeded team of Kupfer and Weindl.
Now that ITA's have concluded, the Panthers will prepare for one of their biggest matches of the season -- a visit to Southern New Hampshire University to resume NE10 play on Friday (Sept. 23) at 4 p.m.
