Garden City, N.Y. - On a day when the Panthers honored the 'Cats of the past, the Adelphi University baseball team took both games of a doubleheader from Bentley University, 6-3 and 9-4, at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
Between the first and second games, the team invited back members of the 1993 Adelphi University baseball team to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the program's first-ever NCAA Division II College World Series appearance.
Additionally, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics unveiled a banner at the Adelphi dugout to memorialize the legacy of long-time head baseball coach
Ron Davies -- who passed away in January at the age of 86.
Game 1: Adelphi 6, Bentley 3
Although Bentley jumped out to the early lead in the second inning, Adelphi answered right back in the home half.
A pair of doubles by
Michael Draskin and
Jack Wishner cut the Bentley lead in half, before
Cooper Johnson knocked in his third and fourth RBIs over his last two games with a go-ahead ground-rule double.
Jordan Falco settled in on the mound and picked up his infield in the fifth, when an error prolonged the inning. Bentley got a run back, but Falco stranded the tying run on third with back-to-back strikeouts.
In a seven-inning game, Falco nearly went the whole way, until a two-out single gave way to
Steven Murphy, who locked down his first save of the 2023 season.
Falco posted his second-consecutive quality start, walking only one and striking out a season-high-tying six batters in the effort.
Game 2: Adelphi 9, Bentley 4
Standout freshmanÂ
Brendan Kenneally took the ball in Game 2 and went five strong while his offense piled on the runs.
In the 'Cats first turn at-bat,
Kyle Olson -- with two on -- lifted a no-doubter out to right-center, staking the Panthers to a 3-0 lead. The Brown and Gold ultimately put up a four-spot in the first, after a two-out RBI single by
Albert Ramos.
Olson raked all game, tacking on a two-RBI single in the second. The lefty outfielder finished a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBIs in the nightcap.
Joe Pasqua, who earned the start as the team's designated hitter, drove in his first RBI of the season with a groundout in the fifth.
Tommy O'Sullivan worked a scoreless inning of relief in his first action since Apr. 8.
Robert Affenita III was tasked with the final out, and struck out the opposing batter on three pitches.
The Panthers have one remaining non-conference game on their slate -- a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday (Apr. 25) at Queens College in Flushing.
