Boca Raton, Fla. - In a game that lasted over four hours, the Adelphi University baseball team put up a whopping 27 runs in a victorious effort at Lynn University on Monday afternoon.
Behind a seven-RBI day from
Joe Pellegrino, the Panthers evened their record at 6-6 overall, and scored the program's most runs in a single game since 1999.
In Adelphi's sixth game of the season that year, the Brown and Gold -- under legendary head coach
Ron Davies -- won 27-2 over Grand Valley State University.
Along the way, the Panthers homered four times (two from Pellegrino) and touched up Lynn pitching in five of the nine innings, highlighted by a ten-run sixth inning.
Pellegrino's two roundtrippers even came in the same inning, driving out a pair of three-run homers in the sixth that put the 'Cats ahead 16-10.
Although Lynn generated a rally of its own and re-took the lead in the seventh, the Panthers never stood down.
With six outs to play, Adelphi trailed 18-16, until a three-run homer from
Michael Draskin gave the visitors the lead for good. In the ninth, the Panthers loaded the bases for the hot bat of
Anthony Cipri, who delivered his first career grand slam in a pinch-hit spot to open the floodgates.
Lynn managed to slice the large deficit down to two runs against the Adelphi bullpen, but
Steven Proko came on to retire the final two outs for the save.
Before Proko entered,
Cullen SantaMaria was effective over 1.2 innings in earning the win.
Bobby Molinaro made his first career start and went the first three innings.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will look to keep the offensive outburst going Tuesday (Mar. 14) at 1 p.m. against Alliance University in Lantana, Fla.
