Jonesboro, Ga. - A 2009 inductee of the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame,
Nadine Reid Chase '80 suddenly passed away Sunday at the age of 64.
A pioneer in Adelphi women's basketball history, Chase concluded her four-year playing career (1976-80) with 1,150 points. Of the twenty-five Panthers that now encompass the 1,000-point scoring club, Chase was the first to crack that list back in 1979.
Chase suited up in a pre-Title IX era, when women's sports was not recognized by the NCAA. The Panthers played under the flag of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), which was founded in 1971 to govern collegiate women's athletics in the United States.
Under the tutelage of legendary Adelphi figurehead
Janet Ficke, Chase helped lead the Brown and Gold to a 13-9 record in her first season and a sixth-place finish at the New York State AIAW Championships.
The following year, Chase and the Panthers upset top-seeded St. John's University at the New York State Tournament. She was tabbed a Big Apple All-Star Honorable Mention.
As a senior and team co-captain in 1979-80, Chase officially left an indelible mark on the program, becoming the first 1,000-point scorer in the program's history.
