Women's Basketball Feeds the Hungry at Soup to Nuts Kitchen

Freeport, N.Y. - In giving back as it has all season, the Adelphi University women's basketball team volunteered its time last Wednesday at the Soup to Nuts Soup Kitchen in Freeport.

The responsibilities ranged from the arrangement of bags and food containers to preparing tables for the distribution of food, clothing and various household items.

Formerly the Freeport INN, the Soup to Nuts Soup Kitchen helps those faced with hunger and homelessness. An average of 600 meals -- through the generosity of volunteers -- are made weekly at lunchtime to feed those in need.

"We appreciate opportunities like this, because it teaches us to not take life's simple pleasures for granted. This experience was not just about providing food, supplies, and clothing to people in need, but also recognizing that we can make a difference in the lives of others," Head Coach Sade Jackson said.

Located at Christ Lutheran Church in Freeport, the Soup to Nuts Soup Kitchen serves freshly-prepared to-go lunches from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the week.

"It was really amazing to be able to help so many people during this experience. I loved seeing their faces light up when I would hand them different products," Sydney Rosenoff described. "It's always a good thing when you get to give back to your community, and I look forward to doing something like this again."
