Coram, N.Y. - A run towards a conference title fell short for the Adelphi University women's bowling team Sunday in the ECC Championship match at Coram Country Lanes in Coram.
The Panthers lost the first two rounds of the 'Mega-Match' to Wilmington University, dropping the traditional match by a 1,091-992 final and the best-of-five Baker match in five games.
"I'm super proud of this team and how they left it all out on the lanes," said
Dennis Kearney, who coached Adelphi to its first appearance in an ECC final since 2017. "Even though it wasn't the outcome we wanted, we have a lot to hang our hats on. The future is bright for this young team."
Adelphi rounds out the year with a 58-37 overall record and a .611 winning percentage -- the team's sixth consecutive winning season under Kearney.
In the traditional contest, the Panthers led 594-581 through the first three games, before Wilmington capped off the match with a 243 and 267 that put the Wildcats over the top.
With Adelphi in need of a win to keep its championship hopes alive, the two teams went the distance in the best-of-five Baker format to decide a victor.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but Wilmington narrowly escaped with a 182-172 victory in the fourth game and prevailed 257-212 in the fifth to clinch it.
